Nationalism and Rightism are Incompatible

If we are to define "Leftism" and "Rightism" as existing on an axis consisting of two poles, with the Liberal extreme end being the closest to collectivism and the Conservative extreme end being closest to individualism, Nationalism would be far closer to Leftism than Conservatism. Nationalism is a collectivist impulse which transcends individualism and speaks to the Zeitgeist of the people, rather than to the needs and wants of the individual.
Nationalism is incompatible with the current rightist model. Rightism, in its championing of capitalism, cannot possibly address the problem of the dissentegration of community and social life as a consequence of the ubiquitousness of technology, immigration, individual liberation, and deterritorialization.
Ultimately, the philosophy espoused and championed by the Liberal, which aims to liberate the individual from the constraints imposed on him by society, is much more compatible with rightism than Nationalism is to rightism. You will always see an alliance between established Rightists and Liberals against Nationalism. Nationalism is a fundamental repudiation of several crucial concepts of Liberalism, such as the blank slate. Nationalists not only deny the existence of human being independent of their wider groups, but they go so far as to deny the existence of individuals themselves. All human beings are the product of an endless series of contingencies.
The problem with American conservatism is that it's conserving American liberalism. Liberalism itself allows too much permissiveness on individual behavior, which eventual deconstructs itself. Is there any wonder that the revolution of the 1960s happened in a country where everything is permissible? If everything is permissible, why not revolution against the order of society itself? Conservatives cannot oppose the collective action of revolution by this ball-pit of individuals because by doing so they would betray the very same liberal principles they profess to be defending. So instead of being the champions their society needs and taking a moral stand against advances made by agents of liberation, they rely primarily on reactionary impulses which lay dormant in the public at large to gain their political power, knowing full well that nothing will be done to halt, or even reverse, the spirit of liberation unleashed by the left. Conservatives are fundamentally liberals. Fundamentally agents of the liberation.
